worldsteel: World Crude Steel Output Tumbled in May 2025

The production of crude steel increased year over year in Africa, Middle East, North America and South America.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The 70 nations that are members of the World Steel Association (worldsteel) produced 158.8 million tonnes (Mt) of crude steel in May of this year, a significant 3.8% decrease from the same month the previous year.

Asia and Oceania was the region that produced the most steel during the month, with 116.6 Mt. The EU-27 region was the second-largest producer with 11.4 Mt. The North American nations ranked third with a production of 9.5 Mt. The other regions' output (in Mt) is divided as follows: Africa (1.9), South America (3.4), the Middle East (5.4), Other Europe (3.6), and Russia and the rest of the CIS+ Ukraine (7.0).

The production of crude steel increased year over year in Africa, Middle East, North America and South America. The African region's steel production increased the most, rising by 5.5% over the same month a year before.

All other locations saw a dip in production over the month, according to reports. The production decline was greatest in the Other Europe region, where it was 8.8%. Crude steel production in the Russia & other CIS + Ukraine and Asia and Oceania decreased by 8.1% and 4.7%, respectively, over the previous year. The EU-27 output too recorded decline by 3.1%.

According to worldsteel data, the combined output for the first five months of 2025 was 784 Mt, which was 1.3% less than the corresponding five-month period in 2024.
