SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Thailand Natural Resources and Environment Ministry has undertaken various efforts to deal with rising plastic waste in the country. It has called upon various stakeholders to join hands to reduce plastic use, thus helping the country achieve the goal of 100% reuse of plastic waste by 2027, as outlined in the roadmap for plastic management for the period from 2018 to 2030.
The private sector has made significant contributions to promote plastic waste management by implementing state-of-the-art technology to produce high-value products out of plastic waste. The country has seen various campaigns to raise awareness on the importance of separating waste at the source among general public.
The Pollution Control Department (PCD) and the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) have been collaborating with public and private sectors to ensure sustainable management of plastic waste. One of the initiatives, named the ’Every Day Say No to Plastic Bags’ campaign, encourages people to reduce or eliminate use of single-use plastic bags. The campaign has so far helped in preventing nearly 82,000 tons of plastic bags from entering the waste streams.
The co-ordinated public and private sector initiatives are expected to boost Thailand’s journey towards a cleaner and sustainable future.
