SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)- the leading United Nations organization has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the international non-profit project, The Ocean Cleanup to collaborate on eliminating plastic pollution in oceans and rivers across the globe.

The partnership aims to check leakages of plastics into marine ecosystems by promoting policy actions and behavioural changes, adopting state-of-the-art plastic waste management systems and deploying interception technologies in rivers to crack down on marine plastic pollution. Incidentally, plastic pollution poses serious threats to world’s oceans, marine life and people who rely on marine resources for their livelihood.
Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator noted that the new alliance is an important step to curb the flow of plastic pollution into oceans and rivers. In addition, it will also boost efforts to raise awareness and behavioural change across the entire plastic value chain. Elimination of plastic waste is essential for safeguarding sustainable development, he added.
Boyan Slat, CEO, The Ocean Cleanup hoped that the alliance will help in accelerating the deployment of its technologies in eliminating plastics from the oceans and rivers. Furthermore, he shared the experience of its association with local UNDP teams to tackle plastic pollution in the DRC.
