Telecom Major Sets up 100 E-Waste Collection Centres

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Globe Telecom announced a major drive aimed at boosting nation-wide electronics waste collection and recycling. The telecom major has decided to set up over 100 collection points for discarded e-waste.

The participating Globe stores across the Philippines will accept electronic waste from individual customers. Meantime, organization could book for a free door-to-door pickup of their bulk electronic waste.

The campaign will accept several categories of electronic devices including computers, peripheral devices such as keyboard, mouse, earphones and speakers, printers and fax machines, mobile phones, home appliances such as washing machine, iron, oven and refrigerator, cable wires, printed circuit boards, CDs, DVDs and batteries. However, lead-acid car batteries will not be accepted through the program.

The collected e-waste will be delivered to its partner TSD facilities, where e-waste will be segregated to recover plastics, electronic components and precious metals. The final recycling process is carried out at the TES-AMM Singapore facility.

As per estimates, only 28 out of the total 135 registered treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facilities in the country accepts e-waste for processing. Bulk of the e-waste is handled by the informal sector recyclers, whose operations cause serious environmental damage and health risks.
