SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.S. domestic raw steel production totaled 1.88 million net tons for the week ending May 9, 2026, according to the latest industry data. The production level marked a 9.3% increase compared with the corresponding week in 2025, reflecting continued strength in steelmaking activity across major producing regions.

The capability utilization rate for the week stood at 81.4%, improving from 76.6% recorded during the same period last year. Production also advanced 1.3% from the previous week ending May 2, 2026, when steel output reached 1.856 million net tons and mills operated at an 80.4% capability utilization rate.

Adjusted year-to-date raw steel production through May 9, 2026, reached 33.285 million net tons, up 6.3% from 31.302 million net tons produced during the same period in 2025. The year-to-date capability utilization rate averaged 78.1%, compared with 76.2% reported a year earlier.

Regionally, the Southern district remained the leading contributor with 842,000 net tons produced during the week. The Great Lakes region followed with 522,000 net tons, while the Midwest produced 309,000 net tons. Output in the North East totaled 140,000 net tons, and the Western district recorded 67,000 net tons, bringing total U.S. weekly production to 1.88 million net tons.
