SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The preliminary data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) shows that total U.S. steel imports reached 1.769 million net tons (NT) in March 2026, marking a 5.4% increase from February levels. Finished steel imports totaled 1.306 million NT, reflecting a stronger 10.2% month-on-month rise.

Despite the monthly uptick, imports remain significantly lower on a broader basis. Year-to-date figures indicate declines of 34.7% in total steel imports and 35.0% in finished steel compared to 2025. Over the 12-month period from April 2025 to March 2026, total and finished imports dropped by 22.7% and 26.3%, respectively.

Finished steel import market share was estimated at 16% in March and stood at 15% for the first quarter of 2026. Key product categories recording sharp import increases included plates in coils (up 165%), cut length plates (up 143%), hot rolled sheets (up 70%), heavy structural shapes (up 48%), and wire drawn products (up 40%).

Among suppliers, South Korea, Brazil, and Canada led March shipments, while Vietnam posted the sharpest growth. Canada remained the top supplier over the past 12 months despite a notable decline.
