SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data recently issued by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), there was a slight decrease in the number of applications for steel import permits in April 2025.
The Commerce Department reports that 2.208 million net tons of permit applications were submitted in April of this year. Compared to the 2.403 million net tonnage permit tons registered the previous month, this indicates a significant decrease of more than 8.1%. The steel import permit tonnage in March 2025 was 11.7% lower than the final total imports of 2.501 million net tons in March 2025, according to AISI data.

Compared to the final import total of 1.823 million net tons in March 2025, the import permit tonnage for completed steel in April of this year was 1.659 million net tons, a considerable decrease of 9%.
