The construction is expected to commence during the first quarter next year, with startup scheduled towards the end of the year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Roseburg Forest Products announced its decision to build a new high-capacity lumber mill in Weldon, North Carolina, thus expanding its operations in the southeastern U.S. The announcement to this effect was made by Governor Roy Cooper on July 1st.

The 375,000-square-foot facility will be called Roanoke Valley Lumber. The construction is expected to commence during the first quarter next year, with startup scheduled towards the end of the year. It has already entered into an agreement with BID Group towards design and building of the sawmill facility.

The facility, with a production capacity of approximately 400 million board feet of dimensional lumber per year, is expected to be one of the highest-capacity sawmills on the East Coast. Furthermore, the completion of the mill will make Roseburg a major employer in the area. The facility is likely to generate nearly 137 new jobs in the region over the first two years of operation.

The proximity of the site to the company’s Roanoke Rapids timber management office made it a preferable choice over other sites. Other factors including robust market demand, business-friendly climate and ready availability of skilled workforce also contributed to the site selection.
