Canfor Corp. to Construct New Sawmill Near DeRidder, Louisiana

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canfor Corporation announced plans to build a new sawmill near DeRidder, Louisiana. The mill, to be constructed at an investment of $160 million, is scheduled to start up in Q3 next year. Alongside, the company declared that it has decided not to go ahead with the greenfield project in Washington, Georgia announced earlier in February 2018.

According to the company, the mill will produce wide variety of high value wood products catering to customers’ demand. The production capacity of the plant is estimated at around 250 million board feet per annum. The mill will operate on a two-shift basis and will employ nearly 130 people for direct jobs, in addition to hundreds of indirect jobs.

Don Kayne, President and CEO, Canfor noted that the greenfield project in Louisiana will help the company to grow its operating footprint and boost its production capacity so as to meet the growing demands of its customers. The investment is in support of its strategy to sustain its top quartile operations and expand its global operating platform.

Canfor Corporation had recently announced capital spending of nearly $200 million towards solid wood and pulp operations in Western Canada and additional $100 million towards solid wood operations in the U.S. South.
