SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith announced that its F-line (fibre-preparation line) project at Kemsley paper mill has achieved a significant milestone by completing the construction of the main building for its new fibre preparation plant. The F-line is intended to supply high-quality recycled fibre to paper machine PM-3.

The total value of the investment project is estimated at around £48 million. The next phase of the project will focus on the installation of the electrical suite that controls the fibre preparation process.

The F-line aligns with the company’s Now and Next sustainability strategy. It will help in avoiding over 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Also, the facility will also help DS Smith to reduce waste by around 39,000 tonnes per year and reduce freshwater consumption by nearly 50,000 cubic metre every year. Furthermore, it will deliver maximised material recovery and reduced energy usage.

The F-line project demonstrates the significant progress made by the company in modernising its operations and driving better environmental performance across its business. Incidentally, the company targets to reduce its Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030, upon comparison with 2019 levels.
