Novelis Completed Major Expansion Project at Brazilian Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Atlanta-headquartered Novelis Inc. announced that it has completed the previously announced investment at its Pindamonhangaba, Brazil plant. The investment project was completed with the technical support of InvestSP, the São Paulo Agency for Promoting Investments and Competitiveness. The expansion was completed on time and within budget.

The $150 million investment at the plant has resulted in expansion of both rolling and recycling capacity by around 100 kilotonnes each. With this, the capacity of the plant has increased to 680 kilotonnes for aluminum sheet and 490 kilotonnes for recycling. This has resulted in addition of as many as 92 new permanent positions at the facility.

According to company press release, the recycling capacity expansion will help the company achieve its sustainability goals to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026 and become carbon neutral by 2050. This is the second major investment in a decade at the Pindamonhangaba plant.

In addition to capacity expansion, the investment comprised purchase of an additional land of around 380,000 square metres. Furthermore, it establishes additional reliable water source for the plant and a new railway terminal.

The project reaffirms Novelis’ commitment to serve the growing South American market with innovative and sustainable aluminum solutions.
