Novelis Yeongju Recycling Center Hit New Recycling Milestone

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Novelis, Inc.- the global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling announced that its recycling plant in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Korea has achieved an important recycling milestone. The Yeongju Recycling Center achieved a new milestone by processing 120 billion aluminum cans since its opening in 2012. Incidentally, the plant is said to have a capacity to recycle 320,000 tons of aluminum per year.

The recycling facility, which employs most modern recycling techniques, processes used beverage cans to produce aluminum sheets, which in turn are used in the manufacture of new products, including new cans for use by beverage giants. The used can gets new life in almost 60 months time. The use of recycled cans to produce aluminum sheet reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 95%, compared to primary aluminum.

The company has been making significant investment in the region over the past several years. For instance, it has made investment of approximately $700 million over the past decade in almost 15 facilities in Asia, Europe, North America and South America. These plants together recycle around 74 billion aluminum cans every year.

Sachin Satpute, President of Novelis Asia noted that the exciting milestone demonstrates the company’s focus on sustainability and innovative actions aimed at improving recycled content in its products.
