NGT Seeks Fresh Action Taken Report on Illegal E-Waste Units

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to submit a fresh report on thousands of illegal e-waste processing centres in and around Delhi.

The order was issued Thursday by a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel. The action is in response to a plea, which claimed that approximately 5,000 illegal waste processing units are still operating in the Delhi suburbs and adjoining areas. The deadline for submission of the new report is 23rd April, 2020.

The Central Pollution Control Body (CPCB) had recently organized a meeting of all stakeholders to discuss the alarming findings of the Toxics Link study. The study had cited Seelampur (Shahdara), Mustafabad (North East Delhi), Behta Hazipur and Loni (Ghaziabad) as the centres of illegal e-waste operations. The CPCB had constituted nine inspection teams to monitor and take necessary actions against illegally operating e-waste storage and processing units.

Despite strict action by the DPCC leading to closure of 57 such facilities in July last year, the tribunal has asked the Committee to file fresh action report.
