NGT Demands Rigorous Ban on Plastic Waste Imports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has called upon government authorities to implement strict ban on imports of plastic waste into the country. It urged Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to take measures to promote use of domestic plastic waste in various developmental projects such as road construction.

According to Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Chairperson, NGT, the CPCB is required to take adequate action so as to ensure that its recommendation is fully implemented by all plastic waste industry stakeholders. All stakeholders are required to apply for new registration or registration renewal, as applicable. Such applications must be processed in line with the checklist issued by the CPCB. Further, NGT has directed CPCB to submit an action taken report on this matter within two months.

While hearing a plea, the NGT noted that the imported plastic waste causes hazards to the environment. During the hearing, CPCB urged for restriction of plastic waste imports. It noted that the country generates around 26,000 tons per day, which are not properly managed. Further, it highlighted that, as per amended rules, burning of plastic waste is prohibited. Plastic waste could be recycled only if it conforms to Indian Standards, it added.

Meantime, 25 state governments in the country may require to pay compensation of INR 1 crore each for not submitting action plan on plastic waste disposal to the CPCB before the April 30 deadline set by the NGT.
