The official opening of the facility is scheduled to take place on March 19th.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hong Kong’s one-of-a-kind e-waste recycling facility built at a cost of nearly $70 million, located at Eco Park, 133 Lung Mun Road, Tuen Mun Area is all set to open its doors. The project, whose groundbreaking ceremony was held in February 2016, was initially planned to become operational by 2017, but had been delayed due to several reasons.
The official opening of the facility is scheduled to take place on March 19th. The inauguration ceremony will be attended by chief executive Carrie Lam, the head of government of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong; Wong Kam-sing, secretary for the environment and Dr Axel Schweitzer, chairman of ALBA Group's board of directors among other dignitaries, suppliers and contractors.
The new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Treatment and Recycling Facility (WEEETRF) is constructed by ALBA Integrated Waste Solutions, Hong Kong, a subsidiary of the Berlin, Germany-headquartered ALBA Group, which owns majority (73%) share in the joint venture integrated e-waste recycling project. The recyclable collector Integrated Waste Solutions (IWS) holds 25% share, whereas the remaining 2% share is held by Germany-based recycling equipment manufacturer-Erdwich.

The new facility will help the country to process much of its e-waste domestically, reducing the country’s WEE exports to facilities across Asia and Africa. Initially, the facility will be able to process nearly 30,000 tonnes of electronic waste per annum, with the potential to almost double the processing capacity within one year. The facility boasts 85% recovery rate.
ALBA has already set up four locations for collecting and storing the electronic waste including televisions, computers, washing machines from nearby districts. The collected waste will be transported to the facility, where they will be processed using ALBA’s proprietary techniques to recover invaluable secondary materials.
