MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Gold prices remained under pressure during the week ended October 30, 2026, as investors reassessed the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook and adjusted their positions amid broader financial market volatility, according to the World Gold Council (WGC).
The LBMA Gold Price PM closed Friday at $3,913 per ounce, down 2.5% for the week. Bullion also traded below the psychologically important $4,000 threshold for the first time since mid-July, bringing its reported year-to-date decline to 10.4%.
ScrapMonster Edge: Futures Selling, Not Broad ETF Withdrawals, Drives Gold Weakness
The WGC's latest analysis points to an important distinction in gold investment demand. Recent selling appears concentrated among leveraged futures investors, while U.S. gold exchange-traded fund flows have remained comparatively stable.
Since mid-October, COMEX Managed Money positions have declined by approximately 11 tonnes, with other reportable, non-reportable and spreading positions falling by a combined approximately 70 tonnes, according to WGC estimates.
Market takeaway: Gold's decline does not necessarily indicate that every investor group is reducing exposure. Futures positioning and ETF holdings are sending different signals, making the composition of investment flows as important as the headline price movement.
Federal Reserve Outlook Weighs on Gold
The WGC attributed much of the recent weakness to changing expectations for U.S. monetary policy following the Federal Reserve's October meeting.
Expectations of tighter policy have increased the relative appeal of interest-bearing assets, including bonds, encouraging some investors to reduce their gold positions.
The council also identified leveraged investor selling as a significant contributor to the recent decline, even as longer-term ETF investors demonstrated greater stability.
WGC Identifies $3,858 as Key Gold Support
The WGC report cited $3,858 per ounce as an important technical support level.
A sustained move below that level could bring additional support areas at $3,820, $3,605 and $3,500 per ounce into focus, according to the published market analysis.
On the upside, $4,083 per ounce represents initial resistance. A recovery above the 55-day moving average, cited near $4,275, would provide stronger technical evidence of improving price momentum.
These levels represent the market assessment reported by the WGC, rather than guaranteed price targets.
U.S. Elections and Employment Data Remain in Focus
The WGC identified the November 3 U.S. midterm election results and October non-farm payrolls as the next important market developments to monitor.
Both could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's policy direction and broader financial market sentiment.
