Gold Holds Above $3,950 as U.S.–Iran Peace Hopes Ease Inflation Concerns

Gold held above $3,950 per ounce in early November 3 trading after its strongest daily gain in two months. Falling oil prices eased inflation concerns as investors monitored U.S.–Iran peace negotiations, technology-stock volatility and the U.S. midterm elections.

Key Points

  • Gold: Spot prices rose 0.3% to $3,956.32/oz, following Monday's 1.9% rebound.
  • Oil: Brent crude fell more than 7% amid hopes of progress in U.S.–Iran peace negotiations.
  • Other metals: Silver gained 0.2%, while platinum and spot palladium rose 0.6% each.
  • Market risks: Technology-stock selling and uncertainty surrounding U.S. monetary policy remained concerns.
  • U.S. elections: Investors awaited the November 3 midterm results.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Gold held above $3,950 per ounce in early Tuesday trading after its strongest daily advance in two months, supported by lower oil prices and hopes of progress in U.S.–Iran peace negotiations.

At 7:29 p.m. ET on November 2 (00:29 GMT on November 3), spot gold gained 0.3% to $3,956.32 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures slipped 0.1% to $3,966.17. The U.S. Dollar Index edged lower to 101.80.

Bullion had climbed 1.9% on Monday after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian indicated that his government had received greater authority to pursue negotiations. U.S. President Donald Trump also signaled possible diplomatic progress, contributing to a decline of more than 7% in Brent crude.

ScrapMonster Edge: Why Falling Oil Prices Helped Gold Recover

Gold typically benefits from geopolitical uncertainty, but the latest rebound highlights a different market relationship. Lower oil prices can ease inflation expectations and reduce concerns about further interest rate increases, improving the relative appeal of non-yielding bullion.

That helps explain why gold strengthened alongside hopes of reduced tensions in the Middle East. The previous week's technology-stock selloff had also forced some investors to sell gold to raise cash, adding another source of short-term price pressure.

Market takeaway: Gold's near-term direction is being influenced by competing forces: changing energy prices, expectations for Federal Reserve policy and investor liquidity needs. Monday's rebound was significant, but it did not establish that October's broader decline had ended.

U.S.–Iran Peace Hopes Push Oil Prices Lower

Signs of possible diplomatic progress between Washington and Tehran helped ease concerns about further disruptions to global energy supplies.

The prolonged conflict has contributed to elevated energy prices and inflationary pressure, complicating the interest rate outlook for major central banks.

As oil prices retreated, investors reassessed the possibility of additional monetary tightening. Higher interest rates generally weigh on gold because the metal does not generate interest income.

However, the possibility of renewed military escalation remained a risk, with negotiations yet to produce a confirmed peace agreement.

Gold Recovers After October's 6.8% Decline

Gold fell 6.8% in October, breaking below $4,000 per ounce and reaching a one-year low toward the end of the month.

Last week's technology-led equity selloff added pressure as some investors liquidated bullion positions to cover losses elsewhere in their portfolios.

Further weakness in Asian technology shares, following declines among U.S. semiconductor companies, remained a concern for precious metals investors.

Technical indicators suggested that gold had entered oversold territory during the previous week. ANZ also identified stronger physical buying among Chinese households during the price decline as a source of support.

Silver, Platinum and Palladium Post Early Gains

Other precious metals recorded modest gains in the early trading snapshot:

  • Silver: Rose 0.2% to $50.77 per ounce.
  • Platinum: Increased 0.6% to $1,455.25 per ounce.
  • Spot palladium: Gained 0.6% to $973.37 per ounce.
  • Palladium futures: Advanced 0.3% to $965.25.

U.S. Midterm Elections Remain in Focus

Investors were also awaiting the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, with the results potentially influencing expectations for fiscal policy, government borrowing and the U.S. dollar.

Changes in those expectations could affect the outlook for interest rates and demand for gold as a financial hedge.

Despite the recent rebound, the precious metals market remained exposed to renewed geopolitical tensions, movements in energy prices and further volatility across global technology stocks.
