Key Points
- Gold has held support near $4,300 after pulling back from a recent move toward $4,700.
- Lower highs and a recent higher low have formed a symmetrical triangle on the short-term chart.
- Downside levels highlighted in the analysis include $4,200, $4,100 and the previously defended $4,000 area.
- A move above $4,500 would shift attention back toward $4,600 and $4,700.
- U.S. inflation data and the September 15–16 FOMC meeting represent the next major event risks for gold.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Gold is consolidating after two recent pullbacks, first following Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks and again after last Friday’s U.S. nonfarm payrolls report.
Sellers have so far failed to push the metal to a lower low. Instead, the price action has produced a short-term symmetrical triangle, leaving the market compressed between declining resistance and a recent higher low.
The setup comes as expectations for tighter U.S. monetary policy have increased ahead of next week’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting. That backdrop has weakened part of the traditional fundamental case for non-yielding assets such as gold, although the Forex.com analysis argues that actual buying and selling ultimately determine price direction.
$4,300 Support Keeps Larger Gold Trend in Focus
The immediate technical question is whether the support seen around $4,300 represents another pause within the broader uptrend or the early stage of a deeper reversal.
That question follows an earlier and more significant defense of the $4,000 level. Gold tested that area repeatedly earlier in the summer as rate-hike expectations increased and the U.S. dollar strengthened.
Buyers continued to emerge around and below $4,000 despite a less supportive interest-rate backdrop. Following the July FOMC meeting, gold subsequently rallied more than 17.5% over several weeks.
The earlier price action is significant because it showed that buying interest remained present even when the macroeconomic backdrop appeared less favorable for gold.
The current pullback therefore provides another test of whether similar demand remains in the market at lower levels.
Inflation and Fed Decision Create Downside Test
Gold recently retreated from a move toward $4,700, with $4,300 so far providing support.
The bearish scenario outlined in the Forex.com analysis would become more relevant if upcoming U.S. producer and consumer inflation data keep the possibility of a rate increase alive and the Federal Reserve follows with tighter policy at its September 15–16 meeting.
Under that scenario, gold could face a deeper pullback. The more important technical signal, however, would be whether sellers can establish a new lower low.
If buyers return before the $4,000 level is retested, prior resistance around $4,200 and the $4,100 area could emerge as potential support zones.
The $4,000 level remains the deeper reference point because of the sustained buying interest seen there earlier in the summer.
Short-Term Triangle Leaves Both Directions Open
On shorter-term charts, gold has produced both lower highs and a more recent higher low, forming a symmetrical triangle.
By itself, that pattern does not provide a directional signal. Because it developed after a pullback, however, the formation could also be interpreted as a potential bear pennant if support breaks.
A downside break would bring the lower support zones back into focus, particularly if accompanied by stronger inflation data or a more hawkish Federal Reserve outcome.
The bullish scenario would require buyers to regain control above the $4,500 area, which acted as resistance last week.
A sustained move through $4,500 would shift attention toward a retest of $4,600, followed by $4,700. A break beyond those levels could reopen the possibility of fresh highs.
Price Reaction Remains the Critical Signal
The analysis cautions against assuming that gold must respond to economic data in a predetermined way.
Higher interest rates can increase the relative appeal of yield-bearing assets and create a headwind for gold, but earlier price action showed that strong buying can persist even when the fundamental environment appears less favorable.
For that reason, the reaction around established support and resistance levels may provide a clearer indication of whether the current move is a temporary pullback or the beginning of a broader reversal.
