WGC: Gold ETF Inflows Hit Record $31 Billion as Physical Investment Weakens in Q3 2026
Global gold investment demand reached 479 tonnes in the third quarter of 2026, down 14% year over year. Physically backed gold ETFs attracted a record $31 billion in inflows, while bar and coin investment fell to its lowest quarterly level in four years, according to the World Gold Council.
Key Points
- Investment demand: 479 tonnes, down 14% compared with Q3 2025.
- Gold ETFs: 211 tonnes of inflows, worth a record $31 billion, lifting total holdings to 4,256 tonnes.
- Bar and coin demand: Fell 19% year over year to 268 tonnes.
- India: Physical investment declined 40% to 55 tonnes.
- China: Bar and coin demand increased 7% to 79 tonnes.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Global gold investment remained substantial during the third quarter of 2026, supported by strong exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows despite weaker purchases of physical bars and coins, according to the World Gold Council's (WGC) latest Gold Demand Trends report.
Total investment demand, excluding over-the-counter activity, reached 479 tonnes, down 14% from the exceptionally strong third quarter of 2025.
Physically backed gold ETFs attracted 211 tonnes of net inflows, pushing global holdings to a record 4,256 tonnes. In dollar terms, quarterly ETF inflows reached an unprecedented $31 billion.
ScrapMonster Edge: Gold Investment Is Shifting Between Products
The WGC figures reveal a notable divide in investor behavior. Gold ETFs attracted 211 tonnes during Q3, while bar and coin demand declined 19% year over year to 268 tonnes.
ETF investment recovered strongly from second-quarter outflows, even as physical buyers became more cautious amid uncertain price direction and elevated interest rates.
However, the weakness in physical investment should be viewed in context. Global bar and coin demand still reached 1,053 tonnes during January–September, its strongest first-nine-month performance since 2013.
Market takeaway: Softer retail buying does not necessarily indicate weaker demand across the entire gold investment market. ETF flows, physical purchases and regional investment patterns are providing different signals, making the composition of demand important when assessing the broader market.
European Gold ETFs Lead Quarterly Inflows
European-listed gold ETFs attracted 92 tonnes during the quarter, representing the largest regional contribution.
North American funds followed with 81 tonnes, while Asian funds added approximately 34 tonnes.
According to the WGC, investor concerns over inflation, fiscal sustainability and financial market uncertainty helped support ETF demand despite higher bond yields and other factors that typically weigh on gold.
Bar and Coin Demand Falls to Four-Year Low
Global investment in gold bars and coins declined to 268 tonnes, down 19% from the corresponding quarter of 2025.
The WGC attributed the slowdown to rangebound gold prices, expectations that U.S. interest rates would remain elevated and stronger equity market performance.
Despite the quarterly decline, cumulative bar and coin demand reached 1,053 tonnes during the first nine months of 2026, the highest comparable total since 2013.
India Gold Investment Falls 40%, China Records Growth
India recorded a significant decline in physical gold investment, with bar and coin demand falling 40% year over year to 55 tonnes.
China moved in the opposite direction, reporting a 7% increase to approximately 79 tonnes, making it one of the few major markets to record growth.
The difference highlights uneven regional investment conditions, even as global ETF buying remained strong.
The WGC's results suggest that investor interest in gold remains substantial, although demand is increasingly differentiated by product, region and market conditions.
