According to NEMA, the rules are being developed under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act, the country’s principal legislation governing environmental protection and sustainable development.

The proposed E-Waste Management Regulations aim to address the growing challenge of discarded electronics, including computers, mobile phones, televisions and household appliances, by strengthening systems for collection, recycling, safe disposal and producer responsibility.

Meanwhile, the draft Environmental Assessment and Audit Regulations seek to streamline procedures for strategic environmental assessments, environmental impact assessments and compliance audits for development projects.

NEMA noted that the revised drafts already incorporate feedback gathered during earlier stakeholder consultations and public participation forums.
