Century Aluminum Collaborates to Boost Carbon Capture at Iceland Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Century Aluminum Company announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Nordural Grundartangi ehf, signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Ocean GeoLoop, for carbon capture at the Grundartangi, Iceland plant. The collaboration project will see implementation of Ocean GeLoop’s carbon capture solution to reduce Iceland’s carbon emissions by nearly 10%.

The carbon capture solution by Ocean GeoLoop offers several unique capabilities. The carbon separation process is 100% clean and is capable of capturing 100% of the carbon dioxide. Moreover, it doesn’t require special adaptations based on the type of flue gas. The e-Loop-assisted carbon capture process also enables production of electricity from low quality heat sources.

Gunnar Guðlaugsson, CEO, Nordural Grundartangi ehf said that it is excited at the prospect of being able to capture, store and use the carbon dioxide emissions at the plant. Although the company is far ahead of the curve in terms of carbon footprint, the proposed carbon capture scheme would help the company to deliver true carbon neutrality, he added.

The Century Aluminum subsidiary is the producer of Natur-Al aluminum. It has one of the lowest carbon dioxide footprints in the world. The new partnership will help the company to become a carbon neutral aluminum producer.
