Century Aluminum Announced New Power Supply Deal for Iceland Smelter

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Century Aluminum Company announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Norðurál Grundartangi ehf has signed a letter of intent with renewable energy producer Qair towards supply of green electricity to the company’s  Grundartangi smelter. The agreement is for supply of wind power from Qair’s windfarms are the currently under development in Iceland.

Apart from this, the two companies have reached an agreement to join hands towards developing an innovative solution to capture carbon emissions from the smelter. Upon successful implementation of the project, the captured carbon dioxide will be utilized for the production of eFuel in connection with proposed hydrogen plant, adjacent to the site of the smelter.

Gunnar Guðlaugsson, Executive Vice President, Global Operations and Managing Director of Norðurál Grundartangi ehf said that the company has been focusing on reducing the carbon footprint at its facilities and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. The partnership with Qair could prove to become an important step in its journey to lower carbon emissions, he added.

Century Aluminum Company reiterated its commitment to the highest possible environmental standards across all of its operations.
