The campaign comes as global aluminum demand is projected to increase substantially through 2050.

U.S. Aluminum Industry Pushes for Boosted Production and Recycling
Summary
  • Aluminum industry calls for stronger domestic supply
The Aluminum Association has launched the “America Needs Aluminum” campaign to strengthen the U.S. aluminum supply chain. The initiative calls for greater primary production, expanded recycling, manufacturing investment and reliable, competitively priced energy.
  • Rising demand highlights U.S. supply gap
U.S. aluminum demand is expected to grow significantly through 2050, while domestic primary production currently accounts for less than one-fifth of the country’s consumption. The industry says additional smelting capacity will be necessary to meet future requirements.
  • Recycling remains critical to future supply
The campaign also emphasizes greater recovery and recycling of aluminum scrap. The U.S. aluminum industry has invested more than $11 billion over the past decade, particularly in downstream manufacturing and recycling operations, supporting a more circular domestic supply chain.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Aluminum Association has launched a new campaign urging the U.S. authorities to strengthen domestic aluminum production, recycling, and manufacturing capacity to meet the metal’s rising demand.

The “America Needs Aluminum” initiative, which runs through the fall, focuses on expanding the entire U.S. aluminum supply chain rather than relying on a single source of material. The association is calling for reliable and competitively priced energy, greater recovery of aluminum scrap, continued manufacturing investment and stronger action against unfairly traded imports.

Association President and CEO Charles Johnson said aluminum is increasingly important to transportation, construction, packaging, defense, energy infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.

The campaign comes as global aluminum demand is projected to increase substantially through 2050. The U.S. currently produces less than one-fifth of the primary aluminum it consumes, highlighting the need for additional domestic capacity. Industry estimates suggest that meeting future requirements entirely through domestic primary production could require several new smelters.

At the same time, recycling remains a major component of U.S. aluminum supply. The association said the industry has invested more than $11 billion over the past decade, especially in downstream manufacturing and recycling operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the “America Needs Aluminum” campaign?
  • The “America Needs Aluminum” initiative is a campaign launched by the Aluminum Association to encourage stronger U.S. aluminum production, recycling and manufacturing capacity. It seeks policies that can expand the domestic supply chain and reduce vulnerabilities associated with imported material.

  • Why does the U.S. need more domestic aluminum production?
  • The U.S. currently produces less than 20% of the primary aluminum it consumes, while demand is expected to increase substantially through 2050. The industry argues that additional domestic smelting capacity will be needed to close the supply gap and support strategic sectors.

  • What role does aluminum recycling play in the campaign?
  • Recycling is a key part of the initiative because recovered aluminum can supplement primary metal production while reducing the need for new raw materials. The association is calling for greater recovery of aluminum scrap and continued investment in recycling infrastructure.
