Key Points
- The Nivea Creme tin now contains 95% recycled aluminum, up from 80% in 2024.
- Joint research focused on alloy composition and production processes while preserving the tin's durability, appearance and performance.
- The higher recycled content is expected to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the aluminum used in the packaging compared with primary aluminum.
- Novelis' Nachterstedt recycling center in Germany has an annual capacity of approximately 400,000 tonnes.
- The 95% recycled-content tin has been available in Germany since early 2026, with broader rollout planned from 2027.
Recycled Content Rises From 80% to 95%
MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Novelis and Beiersdorf have increased the recycled aluminum content of the iconic Nivea Creme tin to 95%, advancing the companies' efforts to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the packaging and increase material circularity.
The companies reached an earlier milestone in 2024 when recycled aluminum content in the tin increased to 80%.
Joint research and development carried out over the past two years focused primarily on alloy composition and production processes, allowing the partners to raise the recycled content while preserving the container's durability, appearance and performance.
The higher recycled content is expected to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the aluminum used in the packaging compared with primary aluminum.
European Rollout to Expand in 2027
Novelis sources the recycled aluminum through its European recycling network, including its facility in Nachterstedt, Germany. The recycling center has an annual capacity of approximately 400,000 tonnes and supports the supply of recycled material for packaging applications.
The 95% recycled aluminum Nivea Creme tin has been available in Germany since early 2026. Beiersdorf and Novelis plan to expand the packaging across Europe and other markets beginning in 2027.
Novelis and Beiersdorf said they will continue exploring opportunities to increase recycled aluminum content and develop lower-emission packaging solutions.
