North American Aluminum Demand Dipped in the First Half of 2025

The Aluminum Association noted that the scrap inventory of the metal jumped higher by 14.7% so far in 2025.

North American Aluminum Demand Dipped in the First Half of 2025

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to early projections made public by the Aluminum Association, North American aluminum demand fell year over year in the first half of this year. Compared to H1 2024, the region's demand decreased by 4.4%.

The research estimates that until June of this year, the combined demand for aluminum in the United States and Canada was 13.1 billion pounds. This is in contrast to 13.7 billion pounds during the same six-month period last year.

Shipments from domestic producers showed a decrease. While shipments of aluminum ingot for castings, exports, and destructive uses showed a steep 11% year-over-year fall, shipments of aluminum mill products contracted 1.6%.

The Aluminum Association noted that the scrap inventory of the metal jumped higher by 14.7% so far in 2025, primarily driven by Trump’s tariff policy. Also, the imports of aluminium and aluminium products recorded an increase of 15.8% year-over-year in the first half of the current year.

The report further noted that the U.S. aluminum industry has invested more than $10 billion in U.S. operations over the past decade.

The support from trade policies is vital for the U.S. aluminium industry, said Charles Johnson, president and CEO of the Aluminum Association.
