SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based steelmaker United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) announced that it has signed a Consent Decree with the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD), Clean Air Council, and PennEnvironment to address the fire incident and power outages at its Mon Valley Works - Clairton plant. The Decree is subject to approval by the Court.
The company expressed regrets over the accidental incidents and hoped that the Consent Decree would provide great benefits to Mon Valley communities.

Under the Consent Decree, U.S. Steel has agreed to make contribution of around $4.5 million to projects supporting public health and welfare and air quality improvement. The funds towards the projects will be administered by the Jefferson Regional Foundation and Allegheny County Department of Economic Development.
In addition, it will invest nearly $19.5 million to upgrade coke oven gas cleaning facilities, make payment of $500,000 to the Allegheny County Clean Air Fund and permanently idle Battery #15 at Mon Valley Works - Clairton Plant, which may lead to reduced emissions. Also, U.S. Steel will cover part of the litigation costs for PennEnvironment and Clean Air Council and lower hydrogen sulfide limit in coke oven gas.
