UPM Finland Units Served Strike Notice by The Paperworkers’ Union

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Paperworkers’ Union announced that it has issued a strike notice to UPM businesses in Finland.

As per the strike announcement, the strike action would commence at all mills except the Lappeenranta biorefinery, on 1^st January, 2022 at 6.00 EET. The strike action at the Lappeenranta biorefinery would start on the same day at 7.00 EET. The strike will come to an end on 22^nd January, 2022 at 6.00EET, if the union fails to reach an agreement on new collective agreement with the company before the said date.

In the event of a strike action, UPM plans to meet customer demand by using deliveries from its mills outside Finland, as far as possible. The company declined to disclose the potential financial impacts of a possible strike. Meantime, the union announced that it has not excluded any work from the strike.

Riitta Savonlahti, UPM’s Executive Vice President for Human Resources pointed out that the union has announced strike action at businesses in which the parties have not yet started negotiations. The company had forwarded several invitations to the union since last spring, but were rejected unfortunately. UPM aims to begin negotiations as soon as possible, so as to reach better terms of employment, she added.
