UAE to Implement Fresh Electronic Waste Rules, Colour-Coded Bins

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) announced plans to introduce new e-waste rules, which will be applicable across all over the country.

Accordingly, retailers in the country are required to provide collection box at their points of sale, towards collection of used devices, batteries and other electronic waste from customers, free of charge. Furthermore, they are required to partner with local authorities to ensure safe disposal of the collected e-waste.

The Ministry announced that new colour-coded recycling bins will be introduced, so as to ensure proper segregation of municipal solid waste.

The bins will be made available in four different colours. The green-coloured bin will be for recyclable waste, including paper, cardboard, metal, glass, plastic waste and others specified by the authorities. Black bins will collect all non-recyclable general waste. The red bins are meant for collection of hazardous municipal solid waste, whereas the brown-coloured bins will be for collection of food and organic waste.

As per estimates, the UAE generates approximately 6.5 million tons of waste every year. Currently only one out of the seven emirates in the country has curbside recycling collections in place.
