The Aluminum Association Proposed New Policy Recommendations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Arlington, Virginia-headquartered Aluminum Association released new policy recommendations to the Biden administrations. The policy documents are aimed at supporting a strong U.S. aluminum industry. The “Presidential Policy Brief: Recommendations for a Strong U.S. Aluminum Industry” several recommendations and priorities for boosting the industry’s performance in future.

The recommendations cover five key areas- energy, environment, infrastructure, recycling and trade.

According to the Association, aluminum can be part of a suite of solutions for 21st century energy solutions. Extensive research and investment on use of aluminum could provide opportunity for significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The North American aluminum producers have been successful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from regional facilities by almost 50% since 1991. The administration should take necessary action to promote smart climate change policy in order to reduce environmental impacts of manufacturing process.

In addition, the Association also called for boosted public and private infrastructure investment and incentives. It proposed setting up of a recycling infrastructure fund and well-designed container deposit programs aimed at better recycling rate for aluminum used in consumer applications. Finally, it called upon the new administration for a strong targeted trade enforcement to protect the domestic industry from overcapacity issues.
