ITA Declared New Aluminum Import Monitoring System

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International Trade Association agency in the United States Department of Commerce announced launch of a new program to track trends in aluminum trade flows. The new Aluminum Import Monitoring and Analysis (AIM) system will help spot trends and shifts in trade flows that make it necessary for an action by industry or government.

According to press release by Aluminum Association, the importers of covered aluminum products would require AIM licenses effective 25th January, 2021. The system will cover various aluminum products under the HTS codes that match the scope of the Section 232 aluminum tariff program. The information gathered from these licenses will be assembled and posted on the AIM system website.

Tom Dobbins, president and CEO of the Aluminum Association noted that the AIM program will help the industry players to quickly and fully understand trends in the aluminum market. Based on the program, one could easily identify those countries that fail to follow global trade rules and practices.

Meantime, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said that the new program will offer a level-playing field for domestic aluminum producers in the country, thus making them more competitive.
