Tata Steel Announced Trial Injection of Hydrogen Gas in Blast Furnace

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading Indian steelmaker Tata Steel announced that it has commenced injection of hydrogen gas in one of the blast furnaces of its Jamshedpur steel plant on a trial basis. The plant has a total of six blast furnaces.

In a statement released yesterday, the company said that it has commenced the trial injection of hydrogen gas using 40% of the injection systems in ‘E’ blast furnace at Jamshedpur. This is the first time in history that such huge volumes of hydrogen gas is being continuously injected in a blast furnace. The trial commenced on Sunday, April 23rd and is expected to run continuously for up to five days.

According to the company the trial injection will provide valuable inputs into operating blast furnaces with greener fuel injectants, Apart from reducing consumption of fossil fuel, the move is also aimed at reducing subsequent carbon dioxide emissions from the blast furnace, it noted.

The trial is considered as an important milestone in the company’s journey towards net zero emissions. It has the potential to reduce the coke rate by at least 10%. Furthermore, it will help the company in identifying further steps in its journey to leaner carbon future, said Uttam Singh, Vice President-Iron Making at Tata Steel.
