Sweden to Construct the World’s Most Modern Plastic Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The construction of Site Zero- the world’s largest and most modern plastic recycling facility is under progress and is scheduled to be completed by 2023, said Swedish Plastic Recycling (Svensk Plaståtervinning).

The facility is being constructed at an investment of SEK 1 billion at its existing facility in Motala. It is supported with financing of around SEK 180 million by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency through its climate investment aid programme. The facility will be equipped with the next generation technologies, which in turn will double the capacity. Upon completion, the facility will be capable to handle a minimum of 200,000 tonnes of plastic packaging per year.

After upgrades, Site Zero will be capable to sort and recycle twelve different types of plastic, compared with today’s four. The plastic that remain after the sorting process will be separated and sent to chemical recycling. The plant employs fully automated processes.

Mattias Philipsson, CEO, Svensk Plaståtervinning noted that the investment will create the prerequisites needed for making Sweden a world leader in plastic recycling. It will make the facility capable to eventually receive all plastic packaging from Swedish households, he added.
