Stena Recycling Announced Huge Investment in Modern Battery Recycling Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stena Recycling will break grounds on what it claims to be Sweden’s most advanced battery recycling facility. The new plant will be built in Halmstad, adjacent to the Stena Nordic Recycling Center. The 250 million SEK  modern facility will be capable of recycling 95% of lithium-ion batteries. The groundbreaking is scheduled to be held this autumn.

The Stena Recycling facilities in Sweden as well as other countries where it operates, collects the batteries. These facilities will carry out initial sorting of the collected material and transport them to the new Halmstad facility, where much of the recycling will be done. The innovative technology, implemented in collaboration with Johnson Matthey, will produce fully refined metals out of the batteries, which in turn could be used in the production of new lithium-ion batteries.

Fredrik Pettersson, Managing Director of Stena Recycling Sweden said that the investment is part of the company’s strategy to be a leader in the collection and mechanical processing of lithium-ion batteries to establish a circular economy for used batteries. The anticipated strong growth in electric vehicles sales will heighten the needs to dispose of spent batteries in a safe and environment-friendly manner, he added.
