SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Germany-based electric arc furnace (EAF) steel producer Salzgitter AG announced acquisition of Germany-based scrap recycling firm Must-Metalle-Container-Recycling GmbH. Must-Metalle through its subsidiary Deutsche Erz- und Metall-Union GmbH (DEUMU).
As part of its Salzgitter AG 2030 circularity strategy, the company has been driving the transition to virtually carbon-free steel production. The acquisition of the scrap processor, which specialises in scrap metal trading, is part of its efforts to significantly expand its scrap recycling activities.
The acquisition of the scrap processor will further advance circularity in the immediate vicinity of the Salzgitter steel site and expand the possibility of using high-quality secondary raw materials in steel production process.
Must-Metalle-Container-Recycling GmbH will continue to operate as an independent company within the Salzgitter Group. It will operate under the name “Harzer Schrott und Recycling GmbH". Founded in 1909, Harzer Schrott und Recycling GmbH" mainly deals with companies in the metal processing sector. The acquisition by the steelmaker will ensure transition of the recycling company to the next phase of growth.
