worldsteel Ranking: Topmost Steel Producers in May 2025

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) announced the list of the top ten steel-producing countries during May this year.

China continued to be the world's top producer of steel, with 86.6 million tonnes (Mt) produced in May 2025, according to the steel trade association. Compared to the same month last year, this was a significant 6.9% decrease. In the first five months of this year, 431.6 Mt of crude steel were produced in China.

worldsteel: World Crude Steel Output Tumbled in May 2025

India came in second with 13.5 Mt of production. The overall production from January to May of 2025 was 67.2 Mt. The United States was the third-largest producer of steel. The nation produced 7 Mt, a slight increase of 1.7% over the previous year.

The other countries to feature in the top ten list of producers, along with their output in Mt are as follows: Japan (6.8), Russia (5.8), South Korea (5.1), Iran (3.4), Turkiye (3.1), Germany (3.0) and Brazil (2.7).

India's output increased the most, rising 9.7% from the same month the previous year. In the meantime, output from China and Russia fell 6.9% and 6.9%, respectively, throughout the course of the year.

The world produced 158.8 million tons of crude steel, a significant decrease of 3.8% year over year. According to Worldsteel data, member nations produced 784 Mt of crude steel overall in the first five months of this year.
