MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Registration is now open for the 21st edition of steelChallenge, an international competition that tests participants' steelmaking skills using digital simulation tools. Organized by steeluniversity, the education and training programme of the World Steel Association (worldsteel), steelChallenge-21 will hold its Regional Championship on November 17, 2026, starting at 12:00 UTC.
Competitors Must Balance Steel Quality, Carbon Requirements and Cost
Competitors will use steeluniversity's steelmaking simulators to produce a specified grade of steel while meeting technical and carbon-footprint requirements. Participants must achieve the required quality at the lowest possible production cost per tonne.
Participants will have 24 hours to complete successful simulation runs. The championship will be conducted across five geographic divisions: Americas; Europe & Africa; Asia–West; Asia–North; and Asia–East & Oceania.
The simulation-based format is designed to test the trade-offs involved in steel production, requiring competitors to make technical decisions while managing cost and environmental-performance requirements.
High School Category Expands steelChallenge's Global Reach
The competition will feature three categories this year: Industry, University Student and High School Student.
For the first time, high school students from around the world can enter the competition. The category follows a successful trial in steelChallenge-20 and is designed to introduce younger participants to modern steel production, sustainability and technology-driven decision-making.
steeluniversity says the high school challenge uses simulation-based learning to help secondary-school students explore how industrial decisions affect quality, cost, efficiency and sustainability.
Registered participants will have access to steeluniversity's Learning Solutions Directory, which includes e-learning courses, live masterclasses, interactive 3D models and opportunities to practise using steelmaking simulators.
The competition forms part of steeluniversity's broader education and workforce-development activities for the global steel sector. worldsteel represents steel producers, national and regional industry associations and research institutes, with its members accounting for around 85% of global steel production.
steelChallenge-21 is structured around a Regional Championship followed by a World Championship. steeluniversity's current programme schedule lists the World Championship for April 19, 2027.
