World Crude Steel Output Slipped in September

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests marginal decline in global crude steel production in the month of September this year.

The production by 64 countries reporting to the Association totalled 151.499 million metric tonnes (Mt), which is down by 0.3%, compared with the output of 151.898 Mt in the same month a year before. Meantime, the combined production during the first nine months of 2019, at 1.391 billion tonnes, was still higher by 3.9% compared with Jan-Sep ’18 production of 1.339 billion tonnes.

The regions which recorded increased year-on-year output in September were Asia, Oceania and the Middle East. The Asian output edged higher marginally by 1.4% over the previous year to total 109.65 Mt, mainly driven by China, whose output was up by 2.2%. The Middle East and Oceania region reported 5% and 5.6% growth in steel output respectively.

The African steel output tumbled the most, falling by 18.4% over the prior year. The South American production too witnessed 18% year-on-year decline. The North American output recorded production decline by 4.8%. The U.S. produced 7.1 Mt of crude steel in September 2019, down by 2.5% compared to September 2018. The Sep ’19 steel output by the C.I.S region declined by 2.6%. The European output slumped by 2%, whereas the Other Europe region recorded 4.7% drop in production.
