U.S. Steel Mills Post Slight Weekly Drop, Solid YoY Expansion

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Domestic steelmakers recorded raw steel production of 1.758 million net tons during the week ending January 31, 2026, with capacity utilization holding at 76.0%, according to the latest industry data. While weekly output edged lower, annual comparisons point to a firmer underlying performance.

Production during the same week last year totaled 1.700 million net tons, when utilization stood slightly higher at 76.3%. This translates into a 3.4% year-on-year increase, underscoring steady demand and operational stability across U.S. mills. However, output slipped 1.1% from the previous week, which ended January 24, 2026, when mills produced 1.778 million net tons at a utilization rate of 76.9%.

On a cumulative basis, adjusted year-to-date steel output reached 7.774 million net tons through January 31, 2026, maintaining an average utilization rate of 76.0%. This represents a 3.4% rise compared with 7.518 million net tons produced during the corresponding period in 2025.

Regionally, production levels (in thousand net tons) were led by the Southern district at 799, followed by the Great Lakes at 518, Midwest at 257, North East at 119, and the Western region at 65, bringing the national total to 1,758 thousand net tons.
