MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): U.S. Steel has received the final air permit needed to advance construction of a new quench and tempering facility at its Fairfield Tubular Operations in Alabama.
The approval clears a key regulatory hurdle for the approximately $475 million project, which is designed to bring additional heat-treatment capacity in-house and expand the company’s ability to supply specialized tubular steel products to the U.S. energy sector.
Q&T Line Targets U.S. Energy Markets
Quench and tempering is a two-stage heat-treatment process that uses controlled heating and cooling to improve the strength, toughness and durability of steel pipe.
U.S. Steel said the new capability will better position its tubular operations to serve customers in major U.S. oil- and gas-producing regions, including the Permian, Eagle Ford, Haynesville and Marcellus basins.
Initial phases of construction began in July. The company expects the new Q&T facility to reach full-scale production in 2029.
Permit Clears Next Phase of Construction
The final air permit allows U.S. Steel to move into the next phase of construction after engineering and early site work began earlier this year.
“U. S. Steel is committed to the future of manufacturing in Alabama and American steel production,” said Scott Dorn, Senior Vice President, U. S. Steel Tubular Solutions.
Dorn said the investment is intended to improve product quality while supporting employees and customers that rely on the company’s tubular operations.
Fairfield Modernization Reaches $550 Million
The Q&T line forms part of a broader modernization program at the Fairfield campus.
Once completed, the campus is expected to include the new Q&T line, a Premium Thread Line, a training facility, a warehouse and upgraded employee changing areas.
U.S. Steel previously announced a separate $75 million investment in the Premium Thread Line, which is intended to expand threading capabilities and capacity for pipe and tubular products.
Together, the Q&T and Premium Thread Line projects represent approximately $550 million in investment at Fairfield Tubular Operations.
Company Says Project Strengthens Domestic Supply Capability
Kevin Lewis, U.S. Steel Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Head of Tubular Solutions, said the project will expand the company’s product offering for the domestic energy market and strengthen its competitive position.
The company said the two Fairfield projects are also expected to use advanced technology to improve safety and operating efficiency.
