SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The total steel imports stood at 2.510 million net tons during the month of March this year, as per the most recent statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is marginally higher by 1.6% when compared with the imports during the prior month. Also, the finished steel imports registered modest increase by 14.7% month-on-month to total 2.001 million net tons.
The finished steel product that reported highest surge in import volumes was line pipes, whose imports during March this year recorded nearly 118% surge over the prior month. The imports of plates in coils too were up by 70%. The imports of hot rolled sheets and mechanical tubing too were up by 40% and 23% respectively.

Over the 12-month period from April 2023 to March 2024, the total and finished steel imports were down by 5.7% and 10.7% respectively. The finished steel import market share was estimated at 23% in March and at 22% over the initial quarterof the year.
The finished steel products which recorded notable increase in imports over the 12-month period were cut lengths plates and ingots, billets and slabs, which surged higher by 22% and 16% respectively, said AISI data.
The largest suppliers during the month were Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Japan, AISI report noted.
