SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable increase in steel import permit applications during the month of March 2024.
Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.689 million net tons in March this year. This is significantly higher by around 11.3% when matched with 2.417 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with February 2024 final imports of 2.471 million net tons, the March 2024 steel import permit tonnage was up significantly by almost 8.8%, AISI data said.

In March this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 2.067 million net tons, considerably higher by 18.5% from the final imports total of 1.744 million net tons in February 2024.
Line pipes reported largest increase in March permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 120%. The import permits for plates in coils and hot rolled sheets were up by 71% and 36% respectively. The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding quarterly period in 2023 include sheets and strip all other metallic coated and cold rolled sheets.
In March 2024, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada, followed by Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Japan.
