AISI: U.S. Steel Imports Plunged in August vs. July

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Census Bureau's latest statistics indicates that in August of this year, 1.864 million net tons of steel were imported. This represents a noteworthy drop of 16.8% from the previous month. Also, finished steel imports posted a similar decline of 16.8% to 1.402 million net tons in August 2025.

The top offshore suppliers during the month were Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Japan. Over the 12-month period September 2024 to August 2025, the largest suppliers were Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Germany.

Compared to 2024, the year-to-date total and finished steel imports decreased 7.0% and 10.6%, respectively.

Overall steel imports decreased by 4.1% and finished steel imports declined by 5.7% during the 12-month period from September 2024 to August 2025.

In August of this year, finished steel accounted for 16% of the total import market, according to AISI data. The market share of finished steel over the first eight months of 2025 was estimated at 20%.

Imports of tin plates and wire rods increased over the September 2024–August 2025 twelve-month period compared to the preceding 12-month period. These items had increases in imports by 54% and 18%, respectively. Also, the imports of lines pipes and oil country goods recorded a jump of 15% and 10% respectively.
