In August 2025, Canada was the offshore country with the highest number of applications for finished steel import permits.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data recently issued by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), there was a notable decline in steel import permit applications in August 2025.
In August of this year, 1.876 million net tonnes of permit applications were filed, according to data from the Commerce Department. This represents a significant drop of almost 15.7% from the 2.230 million net tonnage permit tonnes recorded the month before. In comparison to the final imports of 1.686 million net tonnes in July 2025, the steel import permit tonnage in August 2025 represented a significant drop of nearly 16.9%, according to AISI data.

The import permit tonnage for finished steel in August of this year was 1.400 million net tonnes, a 16.9% reduction from the final import total of 1.686 million net tonnes in July 2025.
Permits for tin-free steel increased by almost 51% over the previous month, while import licenses for tool steel and pressure tube increased by 41% and 15%, respectively, over the same period in 2024. Among the goods that have demonstrated significant year-to-date improvements over the same period in 2024 are line pipes, tin plates, and stainless pipes and tubes.
Canada was the offshore nation that received the most applications for import permits for finished steel in August 2025, followed by South Korea, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico.
