Steel Import Permits Posted Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which signals notable increase in steel import permit applications in the month of December this year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.945 million net tons in December 2021. This is significantly higher by approximately 6.3% when matched with 2.772 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with November 2021 preliminary imports of 3.120 million net tons, the December 2021 steel import permit tonnage was down by 5.6%, AISI data said.

In December last this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 2.195 million net tons, significantly down by 15% from the preliminary imports total of 2.583 million net tons in November 2021. The estimated finished steel import market share in December was 23%.

Steel Piling reported largest increase in December permits over the prior month, surging higher by 174%. The import permits for tin plates and tin free steel were up by 41% and 35% respectively. During the month, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea.

The total and finished steel imports during the full year 2021 totalled 32.626 million net tons and 23.821 million net tons respectively.
