U.S. Steel Mill Capacity Utilization Dipped Slightly

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly domestic raw steel production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) signalled significant surge in output during the week ended December 25, 2021. The weekly production climbed higher significantly by 11.8% over the previous year.

The raw steel output by the U.S. mills totalled 1.802 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 81.6%. The production had totalled only 1.612 million NT at a capacity utilization rate of 72.9% during the same period a year before. Meantime, the production during the week recorded marginal decline by 0.2% when compared with the production of 1.805 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 81.8% during the prior week.

U.S. Raw Steel Output Posted Notable Surge

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production totalled 93.506 million NT until the week ending December 25, 2021. The mills in the country reported capability utilization rate of 81.6% during this period. The production till date has increased by 19.1% from 78.505 million NT during the same period last year. The capability utilization rates too were up from 68.1% a year before.

The mills in the Southern region accounted for approximately 40% of the total weekly raw steel production by the country. The regional output totalled 718,000 NT. The production (in thousand net tons) by the other regions was as follows: North East-180, Midwest-198, Great Lakes-636 and Western-70.
