SERI Gives Final Nod to Revised R2 E-Waste Certification Standard

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The Board of Directors of the Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) has given final approval to the revised R2 e-waste certification standard. The R2v3 Standard was approved by a unanimous vote. The newly approved standard will be made available for download on the SERI website on 1st July, 2020.

The revision process had begun almost five years back, with the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) addressing the concerns raised by customers, industry members and the general public. An initial draft was released in April last year. The second draft, with significant changes from the first one, was released for public comments in December 2019. A total of 660 comments were received during the two public comment periods.

According to SERI, many requirements in R2v3 are based on the current R2:2013 Standard, but are fine-tuned to deliver more consistent implementation, audits and outcomes. It features enhanced data security controls, traceability and downstream accountability.

The facilities will be granted a time period of at least 1.5 years from the release date in order to transition to the new standard. The final transition deadline is yet to be decided. The organization will make available all necessary resources including online training tools to ensure smooth transition, it said.
