SERI Publishes Second Draft of R2 E-Waste Certification Standard

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) has released a revised draft of the new R2 certification standard. It is now open to public comments for a period of 45 days.

The update to R2 standard was proposed by SERI’s R2 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), which has been working on the revisions since the commencement of the review process in August 2015. An initial draft was released in April last year. Almost 500 comments were submitted , which were thoroughly reviewed by the TAC. Consequently, SERI released the second draft of R2v3 in December last year, which is currently open to public comments through an online form.

The second draft proposes some significant changes from the first draft. For instance, it adds scope requirements to ensure transparency and that all R2-related activities performed by a facility are audited and included on the R2 Certificate. Also, it focuses more on risk assessment, inspection and monitoring activities in order to ensure that potential hazards are identified and effectively managed. Further, it proposes greater clarity regarding inbound, under control and outbound equipment.
