Salzgitter and Rio Tinto Collaborates to Boost Green Steelmaking

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): German steel production company Salzgitter AG has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rio Tinto on supply of high quality iron ore products towards green steelmaking.

The SALCOS (SAlzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) Program Targets to achieve virtually carbon-free steel production. The MoU between the companies proposes to examine technical, logistical and grade-specific issues for low-carbon supply chains and green steel production processes. It will focus on supply of sustainable raw materials to aid low-carbon steel production.

Alf Barrios, Chief Commercial Officer, Rio Tinto welcomed the chance to work with Salzgitter on ways to accelerate steelmaking, in keeping with our commitment to reduce emissions across the steel value chain. The company is excited to combine its technical expertise with that of Salzgitter to advance the SALCOS program.

The alliance is expected to combine the knowledge and expertise of both the companies so as to make further progress with low-carbon steel production. Moreover, it will examine the carbon emissions in the entire supply chain and opportunities for their registration and certification.
