Leading Czech Steelmaker Melted 800,000 Tonnes of Scrap in 2021

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Czech integrated steelmaker Trinecké železárny announced that its blast furnace steelmaking complex melted around 800,000 metric tons of scrap metal during the previous year. This includes all of its own metal scrap generated via its production process.

According to Ceslav Marek, Director of Production, Trinecké železárny, the blast furnace recycles over 100,000 tonnes of separated metal-bearing fractions containing slag every year, which in turn are used to replace natural iron ores.

In addition to the above, the steelmaker also supplies granulated blast furnace slag, which is produced during the production of pig iron. In 2021 alone, the company supplied nearly 600,000 tonnes of the material to various cement plants. By this, the steelmaker saved nearly 550,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which would otherwise have been generated by burning limestone and clay during production.

Trinec ironworks uses more than 90% of the metallurgical gases produced during production, thereby replacing consumption of up to 500,000 tonnes of thermal coal or 450 cubic metres of natural gas.

The steelmaker has been a leader in the circular economy among European metallurgical companies.
