Russia Likely to Add Maximum Aluminum Smelters in Future

NEW DELHI (Scrap Monster):  CRU-the leading commodity research and analyst group has predicted that Russia is likely to add maximum aluminum smelting capacity outside China. However, it still expects China to account for majority of the new worldwide aluminum smelting capacities.

According to CRU, global aluminum market recorded significant change in 2017. The supply-side reforms policies implemented by the Chinese authorities continued to limit significant addition to primary aluminum capacity growth in the country. The year also witnessed considerable slow down in Chinese aluminum exports to world countries, especially to the US, mainly on account of stricter trade restrictions

The constrained production growth in China, extremely low inventory levels outside China and the strong growth in demand for the metal make construction of new aluminum smelters inevitable. Although China has a large pipeline of expected smelter capacities in pipeline, the country is yet to commence construction activities on majority of these smelters. For instance, the Chalco’s Greenfield smelter project in Guangxi province is one of the largest. As of now, the construction of the project is expected to begin only in 2020.

Outside China, CRU expects the maximum number of aluminum smelters to come up in Russia. The most significant among them would be the Taishet project by UC Rusal. The construction works are currently in full swing. The planned second phase of the project at a later date would elevate the plant‘s total production capacity to approximately 984,000 tpy.

The Alba’s Line 6 Expansion Project is one of the largest brownfield developments in the Middle East region, which is expected to begin production by January 2019. The project would boost the total production capacity to 1.5 million tpy. The other major smelting project is the 500,000tpy project in Indonesia, being built by Chinese Hongqiao Group.
